Hanging board is carpentry; finishing it is the craft. Taping, mudding, and sanding decide whether a wall reads as one flat plane or as a map of its own seams — and in Tallahassee, where low sun pours through big windows most of the year, there's nowhere for mediocre finishing to hide. Tallahassee Drywall finishes drywall across the Big Bend: board we hung, board your builder hung, or board you hung yourself.
Our Finishing Services
- Taping & mudding new board — the full three-coat sequence: tape coat, fill coat, finish coat, each sanded and feathered wider than the last.
- Finishing DIY and builder-hung board — hanging is a fair weekend project; invisible finishing is not. Stopping at “hung” and calling us is the smart version of DIY.
- Level 5 skim coats — a thin coat over the entire surface for dead-flat walls that survive Florida window light and dark designer paint.
- Skim coating tired walls — wallpaper scars, layered patches, and rough old surfaces coated back to smooth.
- Texture application — orange peel and knockdown applied evenly across whole rooms, the way most Tallahassee builders originally did.
- Texture matching — the skill that makes repairs vanish; new work blended into old until the boundary is gone.
Finish Levels, Translated
- Level 3 — a base for heavy texture only; never paint-ready.
- Level 4 — the standard residential finish: seams and fasteners coated three times and sanded. Right for most rooms in flat or eggshell paint.
- Level 5 — everything in Level 4 plus a full-surface skim coat. The finish for raking light, gloss trim rooms, and saturated colors.
A quote that doesn't name a level is quoting the fastest one. We specify room by room, and we'll steer you away from paying for Level 5 anywhere Level 4 would look identical.
Knockdown Country
Most Tallahassee homes built since the '80s wear orange peel or knockdown texture — it's the regional default, and matching it is where most outside repairs fail. Our finishers spray and hand-blend both, feathering new texture into old so a patched wall reads as one continuous surface. Going the other way — from texture to smooth — is one of our favorite transformations: scrape or sand, skim, and the whole room steps forward twenty years. Textured ceilings have their own page: popcorn ceiling removal.
Humidity Is a Finishing Variable
Joint compound cures by evaporation, and an 85%-humidity August afternoon slows that dramatically. Rushing coats in this climate causes ridging, bubbling tape, and seams that crack by Christmas — which is why our schedules build in real drying time, and why we'd rather tell you four days than promise two and deliver flaws. Dust control gets the same seriousness: work areas masked and sealed, vacuum-assisted sanding where the job allows, cleanup daily.
